The 2017 Orange FOOD Week festival program is out now: and to save you some time flicking through, here’s our top 9 picks for unmissable events during your visit to Australia’s longest-running regional food festival.
FRIDAY 31 MARCH – F.O.O.D WEEK NIGHT MARKET
Leave work early, grab your friends and arrive in Orange in time for the signature F.O.O.D Week Night Market. You’ll get to sample food and wine from over 50 local stallholders. Held in the beautiful Robertson Park this is a great way to introduce yourself to our local wineries without driving around the countryside. Starts 5.30pm and we really recommend getting there as soon as the gates open to be first in queue for all the fabulous food. The event ends at 8.30pm with last drinks at 8pm so don’t get caught out, we’re operating on country time now.
SATURDAY 1 APRIL – BORENORE COUNTRY FAIR
There’s possibly no more charming little village public school than this one, and thanks to most of the parents having their own nearby farms and vineyards it’s usually a food and wine lovers delight. We’ve seen a traditional chocolate wheel turn into a wine wheel at previous events, and there’s been venison and alpaca on the barbie. Lots of artisanal craft stalls and homemade preserves, and on the way home you can take advantage of The Borenore Wine Trail and drop into some fabulous cellar doors such as Heifer Station, Orange Mountain Wines and Small Acres Cyder.
SUNDAY 2 APRIL – MILLTHORPE MARKETS
This has got to be one of the most popular market days in New South Wales, and you’d be crazy to miss it. An incredible array of stallholders from fashion, furniture, food, wine, art and craft in a gorgeous goldrush-era historic village. It’s almost impossible to describe the eclectic mix, so just go and experience it! Get there early to beat the crowds if you’re in serious shopping mood though. After the markets drop into the local Commercial Hotel for a pint in the beer garden or some top nosh from the pub’s Cork and Fork restaurant. You may as well stay the night in the village: you can find lots of accommodation options on the Millthorpe Village website or check out AirBnB.
MONDAY 3 APRIL – SAUSAGE MAKING CLASS AT ANGULLONG CELLAR DOOR
Seeing as though you’re already in Millthorpe, make sure you’ve booked yourself in for a sausage making masterclass with artisanal small goods producer, Stefan Birmili. As this class is being held in the delightful Angullong Wines bluestone cellar door, we’ve got a feeling these sausages are going to go down pretty well with a glass or two of wine. Not bad for a Monday.
TUESDAY 4 APRIL – POCHI MA BUONI SUNSET AND SPARKLING AT CARGO ROAD WINES
A walk and talk holistic vineyard tour with the vigneron, sipping sparkling on the way with handheld Italian streetfood (with a local twist) to keep your appetite for learning keen. The tour finishes at the cellar door with a plate of pasta featuring regional produce. Stay for sunset on the cellar door deck overlooking the picturesque vineyard, order a glass or two – or a bottle!
WEDNESDAY 5 APRIL – STRAWHOUSE SHINDIG AT MR LIM
One of Orange’s latest wine labels teams up with one of our latest restaurant openings, this’ll be hard to beat! Mr Lim‘s Asian Fusion cuisine has been taking the town by storm, and matched with the superb sustainable Strawhouse Wines the night can only be topped off if they bring out the karaoke machine (and they probably will…)
THURSDAY 6 APRIL – ORIENTAL VEGETARIAN BANQUET
Bodhi Garden is one of the hidden foodie gems of Orange. Taiwanese vegetarian dishes matched with a whole menu of herbal tea elixers, with a restaurant wall full of inspiring Tao quotes. Drop into the bottle shop at Kelly’s Rugby Hotel and pick up a lovely local bottle of wine for BYO and that’s your night sorted.
FRIDAY 7 APRIL – POCHI MA BUONI ‘ADESSO ESPRESSO’ @ WASHINGTON & CO.
Start your Friday afternoon the Italian way with an aperitivo straight after work (in fact, skip work early to truly embrace La Dolce Vita!). For only $25 you can park yourself at the bar of Washington & Co. from between 4pm and 7pm and receive a locally-made #PochiPopUp Tiramisu and an Espresso Martini. Adesso Espresso means ‘and now, for coffee!’ and this is seriously a match made in heaven for coffee fiends. Bring along your friends for afternoon tea Italian style – always start with dessert first, always.
SATURDAY 8 APRIL – HUNT FOR YOUR LUNCH IN A TRUFFIERE AT BORRODELL VINEYARD
Get involved with a truffle-hunting expedition with expert truffle dogs under the truffle trees – and then get ready to savour a truffle-infused two-course lunch al fresco at this wonderfully scenic vineyard with a view over the Towac Valley. Wine, music, truffles, yay!
If this list has whetted your appetite, you better get cracking and start booking. Orange F.O.O.D Week is one of the most popular food festivals in New South Wales, and accommodation gets snapped up early.
