ABOUT THE TOUR

We meet at the Orange Visitor Information Centre in Orange to start our Antica Australis Day Tour experience. Hosted by local Indigenous cultural tour guide and bush tucker expert, Gerald Power, we will follow the cultural journey of food in the Orange wine region by visiting the historic gravesite of Yuranigh near Molong.

YURANIGH’S GRAVE

Yuranigh died in 1850 and was a respected Wiradjuri tracker who helped European explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell map the inland of Australia. He died from the cumulative effects of eating the sugar, fat and refined flour of the western diet during the short period he assisted the European explorers. The gravesite is a significant cultural heritage site, surrounded by some incredible scar trees made in his honour over 150 years ago.

BORENORE CAVES

We then visit the Borenore Caves, a sacred Wiradjuri site for both women and men. Gerald will guide us through the caves on a gentle walk and you’ll be able to soak up the serenity and natural spirituality of this sacred place.

We will stop for a pause in the nature reserve of Borenore Caves for an outdoor bush tucker tasting experience. If you haven’t had lemon-myrtle marinated crocodile skewers or emu on wombok with bush pesto on the BBQ then you haven’t lived.

HISTORIC CARCOAR

The charming historic village of Carcoar is intrinsically linked to Wiradjuri cultural heritage, as the Belubula River that runs through the village would have represented an idyllic location for habitation. The name Carcoar means ‘frog’ in the local Wiradjuri dialect and Belubula means ‘stony river’.

The European explorers that Yuranigh helped follow exisiting paths connecting the countryside arrived in the Carcoar district in 1821, and the first land grant was established in 1829. Carcoar was gazetted for European settlement in 1839 and was the third settlement to be established west of the Blue Mountains (after Bathurst and Kelso). It remains one of Australia’s most perfectly preserved 19th century villages and the entire village is classified by the Australian National Trust.

ANTICA AUSTRALIS

We will take a pause by the beautiful Belubula River in the heart of Wiradjuri country to rest and revive our spirits at local Italian locanda, Antica Australis for a three-course unique cultural dining experience. Opened in the spirit of the old Cobb & Co inns dotted along Australian bush tracks, Antica serves up traditional ancient southern Italian dishes featuring fresh local and seasonal produce.

After lunch we will take you on a walk through the heritage streets of Carcoar and it’s beautiful historic buildings –  including St Paul’s Anglican Church (1845), the Carcoar Hospital Museum (1860), the Carcoar Court House (1882) and the art-nouveau Carcoar School of Arts (1901).

MARVELLOUS MILLTHORPE

Returning to Orange we will first stop at the historic village of Millthorpe, just 12 minutes away from Carcoar with both communities deeply connected through history. Full of stylish boutiques and cafes you’ll want to return to explore its charming streets in more detail, we are going to stop by its amazing trio of cellar doors for local wineries, Angullong, Slow Wine Co. and Tamburlaine Organic Wines for a truly great end to our day together.
