Organic and biodynamic food & wine experiences a highlight of Provenance Express
We’ve had so much fun presenting the Vino Express during the Orange Wine Festival for the past two years in partnership with the Orange Region Vignerons Association, that we’ve decided to create our own very special event for this year’s Orange FOOD Week festival in April.
SAY HELLO TO THE PROVENANCE EXPRESS
Presented by Silver Compass Tours
With many of our region’s farms and vineyards already naturally gravitating towards holistic management practices, we thought it was high time to celebrate producers and vignerons who are pioneering the way for organic and biodynamic farming methods in Orange and its surrounding districts. Certification for being recognised as an organic producer takes real dedication as it’s a time-consuming effort, but the rewards lie in the superior product – you can seriously taste the difference. And we’re not just talking about organic vegetables and organic wine here, we’re talking organic lamb as well as free-range chicken, eggs and pork.
We are starting off our 3-day adventure with the now traditional Prosecco & Pastries onboard breakfast, followed by an onboard artisanal cheese and organic wine tasting as we glide over the Blue Mountains from Sydney by train. On arrival we’ll be having a welcome lunch at Groundstone Cafe and taking a look through the Paddock to Plate: A history of food and wine in the Orange district exhibition at the Orange Regional Museum. Followed by an Origin Chocolate organic chocolate and wine tasting at a local wine bar, we will then head down to Robertson Park for the Orange FOOD Week Festival Night Market for the evening. With over 50 local food and wine stalls, this is one of the best ways to get to know the epicurean delights of our region.
The highlight of the Provenance Express is our full-day exploration of organic, biodynamic and sustainable farming on Saturday as we’ll be spending most of the day at Rosnay Organic Farm in Canowindra, an hour’s drive from Orange but an integral part of our surrounding food and wine producing district.
With a quick stop at next-door neighbours, Wallington Wines, for a biodynamic wine tasting (it’s never too early, right?) we are going to catch up with Sam Statham of Rosnay Organic for a tour of the sustainable community of 12 households that share a common lease hold on the property. Each house has been built according to sustainable practices, and Sam is going to host a walk-through of his own strawbale home (built with his own hands) with a Devonshire Tea in the garden. Sam’s then going to walk us through Rosnay’s organic vineyards, fig and olive orchards and we’ll end up at the strawbale winery for a long table lunch of organic roast lamb, vegetables and fig crème brûlée.
We are joining a festival event at Cargo Road Wines on Saturday evening – a holistic vineyard making eminently drinkable wines, Cargo Road Wines has teamed up with Franklin Road Kitchen to host the Two Roads Meet festival dinner. Featuring free-range pig on a spit, organic vegetables straight from the garden, long tables amongst the wine barrels, wine-tastings and a walk & talk through the vineyard before dinner is served. These events are always great fun and you’ll get to feel like you’re truly living like a local.
On Sunday we’re having a Sparkling Breakfast at one of our favourite locals, Nile Street Cafe, followed by an excursion out to Borenore – another high quality producing farmland district of our region. We’ll take in a farm gate store visit to Hillside Harvest, and a stone-fruit orchard tour and morning tea at Thornbrook Orchard where figs, muscat grapes, apples and persimmons will all be in season.
Then onto the Tamburlaine Organic vineyard in Borenore, for a ramble through the vines and wine-tasting. Finally, we’ll finish up at beautiful Balmoral Vineyard for lunch in a woolshed with See Saw Wines, with sweeping views over our extinct volcano, Mount Canobolas – the source of our region’s rich volcanic soil and the secret to the region’s glorious abundance.
Tickets are on sale now, starting at just $897 per person. For more details and to book take a look here >>
