It’s summer and it’s the season for cherries! Cherry season runs from November to December each year and pretty much is the local flavour of Christmas.
Nearly everyone will have a bowl of cherries to grab by the handful from the kitchen table and boxes of cherries seem to take up most of the room in the fridge. Orange is famed for it’s cherry orchards, and many people make the drive from Sydney for the weekend just to pick their own cherries.
Some great places for you to pick your own cherries include Hillside Harvest in Borenore and Cargo Road Wines vineyard on the Cargo Road. Or if you love the thought of freshly picked cherries but don’t necessarily need to pick them yourself you can drop into local farm gates at the BiteRiot! orchard or Borrodell on the Mount vineyard.
SEASONAL BERRIES
Strawberries and raspberries are also in season in summer. If you’re up for picking your own, visit the Huntley Berry Farm or you can ring ahead and place an order and then stop by the farm gate at Borenore Berry Farm.
GARLIC HARVEST
December marks the garlic harvest, and we have a few local growers who are producing chemical-free amazing garlic. Throw away the cheap stuff from the supermarkets, once you start cooking with fresh, local garlic you will never want to go back. The difference in taste is remarkable.
Check out Morganics Farm and Boutique Garlic, and there is also an annual Garlic Harvest Festival held in the first week of December at The Lakehouse at Lake Canobolas in December each year.
SEASONAL PRODUCE
Also in season at this time of year are peaches, nectarines, tomatoes and a wide range of vegetables. Our favourite stop for fresh local produce and eggs straight from the farm is Hillside Harvest, and The Agrestic Grocer on Molong Road always has amazing produce that they bring in straight from the farm. If you’re looking for local organic produce, stop by The Grocer & Co Organics in McNamara Lane.
POCHI MA BUONI POPUP TIP
For hot, sunny lazy afternoons our top Italian tip for the season is to slice up fresh peaches and drop them into a glass of local cool-climate white wine. So easy! So refreshing! So many health benefits with this combination!
