4 days / 3 nights packaged and hosted experience, available only in conjunction with the Wild Heart of Italy package
Arrive in Rome and get acquainted with the Italian dolce vita – this is one of the world’s most incredible cities, and while the sightseeing is amazing the real experience is behind-the-scenes in the laneways where all the real Romans hang out. Follow us through the narrow cobbled streets and let us help you find your bearings amongst the beauty and vivacity of Rome as a living city.
‘Roam Around Rome’ package dates:
Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 September 2018
Thursday 9 to Sunday 12 May 2019
If adding in Rome to our 9-16 September 2018 Ciociaria Food & Wine Travel Experience package, we recommend you arrive on the morning or early afternoon of Thursday 6 September, and for our 12-19 May 2019 Ciociaria package arrive on the morning or early afternoon of Thursday 9 May. You will be met at the airport on your arrival and transferred to the designated tour hotel. We depart for Ciociaria on the Sunday.
Our ‘Roam Around Rome’ package is only available in conjunction with our Wild Heart of Italy food and wine travel experience to Ciociaria.
Depending on your arrival time, take the opportunity to stroll around the Trastevere neighbourhood and get delightfully lost. Stop in at the many bars and cafes along the way. We will be hosting a welcome dinner at a local trattoria in the evening.
Put your walking shoes on and get ready to see the splendour of Rome! We are going to start the morning with a porchetta roll from the Campo di Fiori markets, then stroll along to the Pantheon and through the Piazza Navona, past the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps to the Piazza del Popolo and up into the Villa Borghese Gardens for the marvellous view over the Eternal City. You’ll get your bearings along this walk, and from here we will lead you towards the Roman Forum. We have a two-day Roma pass for each guest, which entitles you to entry to the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Palatine Museum, and the Colosseum (if you feel like daring the queue!). Dinner will be back in Trastevere at one of our favourite Roman medieval restaurants, in an old merchant’s warehouse in a fire-lit cobblestoned piazza.
This is a free day for you to get back out there and uncover the corners of Rome. Your Roma Pass is still valid, so you may like to go back to the Forum or the Palatine Hill or line-up early for those Colosseum queues! We will meet you in the early evening for aperitivos in Trastevere, and then take you to a hidden gem of a restaurant that serves up ancient Roman recipes and has a cellar underneath the restaurant that literally dates back to Roman times. They might even take us down there if we ask nicely!
We can also help you arrange optional foodie walking tours of the truly Roman neighbourhoods of Trastevere or Testaccio, an underground tour of the Roman catacombs or you can even choose to sightsee Rome on the back of a vespa. We will be sending you details with links to local Roman tour companies we recommend so you can book tours direct. Our hotel also offers guided tours.
We will be departing the hotel at around 11am to start out on our Ciociarian food + wine cultural adventure! It’s just a 1.5 – 2 hour drive to our mountaintop village from the centre of Rome.
We have found a charming 3-star B&B right in the centre of the bohemian and foodie quarter of Trastevere, close to all the daily and evening action, heaving with incredible bars, cafes and trattorias and it’s a fabulous quarter for people watching. All rooms face an inner courtyard and the hotel itself is an oasis of tranquility. We have a five-star hotel option on request, but in Rome it doesn’t really matter as you’ll hardly spend any time in your hotel room, trust us!
