Staying in the beautiful medieval mountaintop town of Veroli in a boutique hotel in a beautifully restored 1,000 year old former Benedictine Monastery. Our focus is on local food and wine experiences and cultural adventures during our 8 days / 7 nights Wild Heart of Italy experience. We will be exploring the Ciociaria region’s deep Etruscan-era roots through its food, wine and music and tracing the footsteps of the ancient Italic tribes and the Romans who conquered them through historical local sites.
Our May cultural adventure for foodie explorers features a guided art history tour of the 13th Century Benedictine Monastery of Subiaco, followed by a traditional Ciociarian lunch in the monk’s refectory. It also includes visits to organic and biodynamic vineyards and farms in the region; an orientation tour of Veroli; a visit to Anagni on market day; a cheese-making class and casual lunch at Casa Lawrence in Picinisco; a Ciociarian cuisine cooking class; guided foraging for wild ingredients and herbs with medicinal properties; and a picnic in a secluded forest; a visit to beautiful caves in the region where evidence has been discovered of a Bronze Age human settlement from 3,500 years ago; and a farewell medieval banquet in a tavern underneath a castle.
Each morning or evening before we set off on our adventures we will be providing you with an introduction to each the site we will be visiting. This tour is suitable for people of all ages who are relatively active and healthy – there will be walking in countryside and forests and through cobbled stone villages.

One of the highlights of our Wild Heart of Italy experience in May 2019, the Sanctuary of the Sacred Cave at the Monastery of Saint Benedict in Subiaco (pictured above) is a breathtaking step back into history. The 13th Century monastery enshrines the cave where Saint Benedict lived as a hermit for three years from the age of 17. He emerged in circa 500 AD to commence founding the Benedictine Order throughout Italy. We will be hosted by the effervescent Dom Maurizio, an art historian monk who provides an unbelievable and energetic ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour and insight into the meaning of the frescoes that cover the sanctuary’s walls. We contribute a donation to the monastery on behalf of our guests for this unique access and experience.
